Founder of the famous Nagybánya Artists Colony and later a revered professor at The University of Fine Arts in Budapest, Réti's first phase as a painter focused on the quality of light found in interiors - specifically lamps and sunlight streaming in through windows. I am particularly drawn to his depictions of lamps at night - the perfection with which he captured that soft, warm glow that is at once welcoming and comforting yet somewhat melancholic.
If László Medynánszky (1852-1919) is the master of exterior light in Hungarian painting, then István Réti (1872-1945) is surely the Hungarian master of interior light.
