One explanation I've read is that people have given up on endless, ineffective psychotherapy - the whole field of professional psychology, basically - and turned to "indie" life coaches, who are expected to deliver real results. In this sense, it might be a slightly positive development. I guess people are starving for effective guidance.

@ Epi - With all due respect to Stuart Schneiderman, who is likely an exception to the rule, I strongly believe the vast majority of life coaches are grossly unqualified or underqualified hucksters and shysters.
