Lajos Gulácsy (1882-1932) is regarded as a great painter here in Hungary and his works are included in the Hungarian National Gallery. I personally don't see any 'greatness' in Gulácsy's oeuvre, but I do have a soft spot for the dreamlike quality of his work, as exemplified in the two paintings below.

My impression (and from looking at Google images) is that he had interesting ideas for paintings, but lacked talent at painting.

@ Bruce - I agree with that assessment. My exploration of Hungarian painting has demonstrated that quite a few revered Magyar painters fall into that category.

I've come across an example of the opposite - a (modern) Russian painter called Vladimir Volegov who is technically brilliant, but paints conventional (commerical) subjects.

@ Bruce - I like John Singer Sargent's work a great deal, but I am not familiar with the others you mention. Nevertheless, after Google imaging their paintings, I see what you mean.
