Big Plans and Noble Aspirations

No, this post isn't about anything happening in the big world today. This post is about my plans for the spring.

So, I renovated the chicken coop in the backyard a couple of years ago, and I will finally put it to good use this spring by getting some chickens. Should be fun!

I will also plant the "most epic" vegetable garden my little village has ever seen. My primary objective with the garden is to be the envy of every hobby farmer and smallholder in the village. I want to inspire every single one of them to openly curse my name and spit in my general direction whenever I walk down the street.

Why?

Because I am of the opinion that such "noble aspirations" add invaluable depth and meaning to life.

Note: I'm kidding -- about the envy. If last year's garden serves as any indication of what I may accomplish this growing season, I am bound to inspire pity rather than envy.

What! No mention of poasting online for fake internet points? It's like I barely even know you.
I await with bated breath the considered intersection of Berdyaev and chickens.

@ Luke - Truth is I don't have a very clear sense of things at the moment. In the meantime, I will ponder the intersection of Berdyaev and chickens. I don't think anyone has attempted that yet, so thanks for the idea.

Antifrank and Antibruce are terrifying!

But that sounds great. This time of year my green thumb starts itching. I've been doing no-till and mulch gardening for a couple years now as well as heavy composting (I have three 4x4x4 wooden bins). Fertilizer is no longer necessary and I have a nice rich underground environment of undisrupted fungi/mycelium.

Once the ground thaws I will probably extend the garden some more, put my rock sifter to use (Newfoundland soil is bad for that), and enjoy the simple sweet pleasures of digging, planting, transplanting, and weeding.

@ David - We'll you're a better man than I am. I have yet to discover the simple sweet pleasure of weeding. The other activities? No problem. But weeding? Perhaps I will learn to love it this year.

I'm glad to hear you'll be ready to go when the season starts. I have to start getting into gear very soon. Spring is just around the corner.

Happy gardening, Francis. It's a joy to my soul.

David, you've spurred me to investigate no-till gardening. The soil in my mountainous region is very difficult to work. So rocky that when I stick a shovel anywhere in my land, what comes up is 40% rocks, baseball-sized down to bean-sized. It's caused me to severely curtail my gardening in the last few years because it's exhausting to deal with and to screen every single shovelful of soil I turn over. And even once everything is planted, the rocks beneath the surgace keep bursting up and causing problems. So many thanks for mentioning no-till.

How about Nobel aspirations instead?

You are (surely?) already in consideration for the Peace and Economics prizes; so what about writing the Great Hungarian Novel and aiming at the Literature? (Or maybe, it's already been done.)

@ Bruce - That's very encouraging, but I think it's best if I keep my worldly aspirations modest and be bold in my spiritual aspirations instead.

What? You forgot the always useful insult shamelessly stolen from Monty Python: "I fart in your general direction."
