End Times Confirmed

For reasons I cannot even begin to fathom, I find I like the Justin Bieber pop song linked below.

I know this isn't an official sign of the coming apocalypse, but in my shame-filled mind it should be.

I'm going to spend the next few days repenting. Therapist recommendations are welcome.

Pray for me.
Note added: I don't know much about Justin Bieber, but in this recent interview he says some interesting and apparently sincere things about following Jesus. Take it for what you will, but at times his insights and confessions make more sense than what most church leaders are spewing these days. As difficult as it is to digest, it very much appears the Beebs is on the right side. In any case, the interview makes me feel a little less guilty for liking his Peaches tune - not guiltless, but a little less guilty all the same .

He sure depends on Auto-Tune. I wish singers would try harder and use their actual voices. Then again the 'electronic' sound has become a feature of this genre from so much use.

The song was three minutes, eighteen seconds and the interview was four minutes, three seconds. The former seemed longer.

Suggested therapy: "Songs of the Auvergne" by Joseph Cantaloube.

I approve. Between Twitland and Instagratification, the Beebs has over 200M followers and he often shares inspirational Christianity quotes and messages.

@ Islanti - I'm wary of pop stars in general and even more wary of pop stars who proclaim to be followers of Jesus. I don't know how authentic the Beebs is when it comes to Christ. Probably not very. At the same time, he could be among the 1% (see Dennis Roe's comment below).

Still, it is worth noting that Bieber's views about following Jesus sound more credible than the pope's views on the matter.

@ Dennis - Thanks for the info. I am well aware that folks like Bieber are System assets. This post wasn't meant to be taken all that seriously.

Our public discourse is so relentlessly materialistic that it is startling to hear a mega-celebrity talking about God, Jesus and sin. I welcome it, even if it is impossible for me to discern Bieber's true motivations from a 4-minute video (and I know nothing else about him).

@ Hari - " it is impossible for me to discern Bieber's true motivations from a 4-minute video (and I know nothing else about him)."

Yes, that sums up my position as well. It would be great if his motivations are good.

Try listening to pop music from the 1920/30's like Jack Hylton very positive lyrics and up beat music makes you feel good about life, compare that to pop music from the 1960's onwards which generally has the opposite effect.

@ Mike - Thanks. I've never heard of Jack Hylton. I'll give him a listen.

I believe strongly in individual redemption and when I see even small glympses of it I get emotional. Yes, Bieber is neck-high in evil and degradation, but we saw him take his first step out of it. That was amazing and he seemed earnest. Someone or something planted a seed and it is beginning to germinate. Wouldn't it be great to have someone who straightened their life out then go back and help pull more out of the abyss?

I'm a realist and I won't hold my breathe for apostle justin, but it is so uplifting to here someone in that culture to completely go against the grain and speak beauty and truth.

@ Michelle - I have to admit, I was impressed with his thoughts concerning the forming of a personal relationship with Christ.

I've just recently started reading your blog. I've enjoyed it very much
and thought you might be a sincere and knowledgeable person until I read this piece admiring Justin Bieber. I stay away from the music, movies and celebrity culture of today. It all seems so obviously
evil. I cannot judge Justin nor do I want to. I just want to stay away
from all the bad influences I can. I believe popular culture caters to and nurtures ignorance by continually serving-up brain numbing
entertainment and spotlighting degenerate celebrities to be idolized.
I think paying them ANY attention is harmful. Best Wishes.

@ Lauren - Your point about the evil inherent in pop culture is generally true, but the rest of your comment highlights the problem of communication in blog posts.

Contrary to your observations, I do recognize the innate harmfulness of most pop culture, I do not "admire" Justin Bieber, and I am not a rabid consumer of popular entertainment. I thought that the tone of the post made all of that abundantly clear.

I heard the song in question several times over the course of a few weeks while shopping for groceries - which points to the ubiquitous nature of pop culture - and despite my better judgment, found it be rather catchy.

My surface-level appraisal of Mr. Bieber's Christianity based on a four-minute clip of interview segments was meant to stress the utter decay infecting all forms of conventional Christianity. It's a sad day when a pop singer's views about following Christ appear more genuine and heartfelt than the views most Christians, leadership and laity alike, tend to espouse.

Sorry to have shattered your judgment of me as a "sincere and knowledgeable" person.
