I know this isn't an official sign of the coming apocalypse, but in my shame-filled mind it should be.
I'm going to spend the next few days repenting. Therapist recommendations are welcome.
Pray for me.
For reasons I cannot even begin to fathom, I find I like the Justin Bieber pop song linked below. I know this isn't an official sign of the coming apocalypse, but in my shame-filled mind it should be. I'm going to spend the next few days repenting. Therapist recommendations are welcome. Pray for me. Note added: I don't know much about Justin Bieber, but in this recent interview he says some interesting and apparently sincere things about following Jesus. Take it for what you will, but at times his insights and confessions make more sense than what most church leaders are spewing these days. As difficult as it is to digest, it very much appears the Beebs is on the right side. In any case, the interview makes me feel a little less guilty for liking his Peaches tune - not guiltless, but a little less guilty all the same .

He sure depends on Auto-Tune. I wish singers would try harder and use their actual voices. Then again the 'electronic' sound has become a feature of this genre from so much use.

@ Islanti - I'm wary of pop stars in general and even more wary of pop stars who proclaim to be followers of Jesus. I don't know how authentic the Beebs is when it comes to Christ. Probably not very. At the same time, he could be among the 1% (see Dennis Roe's comment below).

@ Dennis - Thanks for the info. I am well aware that folks like Bieber are System assets. This post wasn't meant to be taken all that seriously.

Our public discourse is so relentlessly materialistic that it is startling to hear a mega-celebrity talking about God, Jesus and sin. I welcome it, even if it is impossible for me to discern Bieber's true motivations from a 4-minute video (and I know nothing else about him).

Try listening to pop music from the 1920/30's like Jack Hylton very positive lyrics and up beat music makes you feel good about life, compare that to pop music from the 1960's onwards which generally has the opposite effect.

I believe strongly in individual redemption and when I see even small glympses of it I get emotional. Yes, Bieber is neck-high in evil and degradation, but we saw him take his first step out of it. That was amazing and he seemed earnest. Someone or something planted a seed and it is beginning to germinate. Wouldn't it be great to have someone who straightened their life out then go back and help pull more out of the abyss?

@ Michelle - I have to admit, I was impressed with his thoughts concerning the forming of a personal relationship with Christ.

@ Lauren - Your point about the evil inherent in pop culture is generally true, but the rest of your comment highlights the problem of communication in blog posts.
