Going Through The Motions

My colleagues and I spent the bulk of this week preparing for the coming semester, which starts on Monday. I found it difficult to ignore the perfunctory manner in which everyone completed their tasks during this time. The endless emails about possible scenarios if the birdemic happened to hit and the utter lack of students on the campus certainly didn't help bolster anyone's enthusiasm. By midweek I was totally drained. Who knew going through the motions could be so exhausting?

I have no real talent for prediction (or anything else for that matter), but I get the distinct sense the semester will be interrupted in much the same way the previous semester was.

I never believed things would return to normal after the lockdown ended; after this week, I am positively convinced normal will never return. On top of that, the few things that do appear normal may actually be nothing more than an elaborate 'going through the motions.' One day these motions may stop altogether.

What follows afterward is anyone's guess.

I heard a statistic tonight that 2/3 of Americans will not get the vaccine when it is first available and 20% will never get it. At first the info gave me a little hope that most people don't think the birdemic is a big deal. But then it made me imagine the beauacratic nightmare that will be thrusted upon us if that many refuse the vaccine.

Things will not return to normal. Even in my own life I find myself reaching out to others less. Its only takes 4 weeks for the human brain to break old habits and adjust to a new way of operating.

This moment could be seized to flip a whole generation of marxist-leaning kids back from the dark side. Hey kids- this is not an abstract thought- this is how your life looks like when the communists control the show. No fun, no happiness, the demonization of those out of line, shared misery.

But of course, like every other good opportunity to pull the train from going over a cliff, the right minded people jump on board and buckle up.

Michelle - I agree that what constituted normal is essentially gone. As for the rest of it - so much is unprecedented; this makes prediction difficult.
