Grain Harvest

7/17/2021

The grain harvest is in full swing here in Hungary. Wheat, rye, and oats are the three most common grains in the fields around my village, though I have at times come across barley as well.

The weather has been ideal for grains, which means the yields have been bountiful this summer. Here's hoping my home vegetable garden brings abundant yields as well.

The field below - complete with large round hay bales - is not far from my house. I have always been enchanted by harvested fields dotted with hay bales. Don't ask me why.

I didn't realize I am enchanted by harvested fields dotted with hay bales until you mentioned you were. Then again, I have spent so much time in the big city that probably any natural landscape could be enchanting.

It's something ancient in the human mind. I get similar feelings from a well-stocked woodpile, flowing rivers, waterfalls, mature forests, plentiful wildlife, laughing children running around.

@ Epimetheus - Yes. Bruce Charlton often refers to the importance of relationships between "beings". In this sense, mature forests, flowing rivers, pastoral landscapes, etc. could be considered beings in their own right - essential parts of Creation.

@ Evan Pangburn - I spent a great deal of my life living in big cities, and though I enjoyed what cities offered, I could never shake the feeling of being cut off from nature/rustic landscapes (much has been written about this, so I won't go into any detail here).

Anyway, when I lived in New York City, I often yearned to experience what is depicted in this scene from the movie Gladiator.

Hello Francis I have enjoyed reading your blogs sorry to correct you but hay bales come from grass those in the photo are straw bales and they come from corn. You are not the first one too make this mistake.

Thanks, John. I stand corrected. Those are indeed straw bales rather than hay bales.

Funny thing is, I do know the difference, but it somehow slipped my mind when I wrote this brief post.

In any case, the straw bales in the photo are not from corn, but from wheat. The corn in these parts still has a bit to grow before it is harvested.
