Hildegard von Blingin'? (Not a Misspelling)

This is probably one of those things that everyone is already aware of . . . but just in case . . .

So, I was browsing Hildegard von Bingen music on YouTube earlier today, and I happened upon a selection called Hildegard von Blingin'. At first I thought the suggested video was merely a typo or, worse, a crude parody. My first impulse was to ignore it, but curiosity got the better of me, and I gave the video a click. What I discovered is apparently referred to as "bardcore", and I have to say, it's quite creative and amusing.

Hildegard von Blingin' basically takes contemporary pop songs and gets medieval on their backsides. The result is actually delightful and fun. If you haven't encountered this sort of thing before, I encourage you to give it a listen.

Comparing the original version of a pop song with the von Blingin' cover is an enjoyable distraction, especially if you take the time to read the von Blingin' lyrics (which are inventive and, strangely enough, convincingly authentic-sounding).

Here is Hildegard von Blingin's version of Radiohead's Creep. The original version of the pop song appears below that.

Enjoy.

Note added: The von Blingin' renditions of Gotye's Somebody That I Used To Know and Hadaway's What is Love? are also entertaining.

I came across this when it came out first - I must say that this (anonymous) woman has a first rate voice for the material; literally as good as anyone I have come across, and I've been listening to medieval type music for more than 45 years. Indeed, this *kind* of parodic but brilliantly-done thing was very much in the spirit of the middle 1970s electric folk that was so formative for me: Gryphon, The City Waites and some of the Albion Band Material. But nowadays (according to an interview) this young lady (and her brother) does the whole thing from a corner of her bedroom - the instrumental stuff is mostly derived from samples.

@ Bruce - Yes, I tend to be a latecomer when it comes to these things - most things actually. In any case, I agree with you - the lady does indeed have a first-rate voice. Interesting to learn she and her brother record these material in a bedroom corner!

By the way, your recent posts at Notions have been great. I especially valued the one in which you examined what we need to DO . . . today's commentary on the birdemic was also spot on.

Thanks for the post! I was also not aware Von Blingins work but appreciate the link and their renditions are wonderful. I am a metalhead at heart but really like bluegrass music and love some of the bluegrass covers of metal music from "fade to bluegrass" (Metallica covers) and especially Steve'n'Seagulls covers and videos (rock and metal covers). There's also 2Chellos version of ACDC's Thunderstruck that is a YouTube must-see.
