Field was highly respected by his contemporaries and has been credited for inventing the nocturne.
Lovely.
With great pomp and ceremony, I am honored to add the Irish pianist and composer John Field (1782 - 1837) to my long list of classical musicians and composers I had no idea even existed despite the half century I have spent on this planet thus far. Field was highly respected by his contemporaries and has been credited for inventing the nocturne. Lovely.

Here is a performance of Field by Denis Matthews - one of my favourite pianists (later professor of music at Newcastle University, when I was at Medical School there) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WCT18q_Z1k
