Little Side Project

I am now officially on vacation from work. As usual, I will be spending the bulk of my time off completing renovations around the house.

The outbuilding in the photo above has two distinct parts. The smaller part, which resembles an outhouse, is actually a miniature smokehouse in which the previous owner smoked and cured meat and sausages. The larger part served as a sort of workshop. Over the past five years, I have used this building primarily as a shed to store bicycles, tires, gardening tools, etc. As the photo shows, the building is a bit run down, but its structure is quite solid.

My overall plan is to raise the walls a little higher, cap building with a brand new roof, and then freshen up the exterior with a fresh coat of render. I removed the clay tiles and beams today. Tomorrow, I'll start laying bricks. If all goes well, I should have the roof up by the weekend or sooner.

@ D - An exterior coat of plaster/stucco that is applied to brick surfaces.

Dang, how many outbuildings do you have? That's gonna be quite a chore to build that wall up! Hopefully your lumber prices here aren't crazy like they are here.... $8 for a 2x4 and $70 for a sheet of plywood. Good luck to you! Post pics.

@ Michelle - Five outbuildings in total, which is quite common in this part of the world where people in villages keep their own chickens, livestock, and have workshops, etc.

The lumber prices are insane here, too. Perhaps worse than in the US when you factor in that the average salary here is far lower than in America. I nearly had a heart attack when I ordered the lumber needed for the roof.

Nice. There are few things as pleasurable as being able to take time away from the bill-paying job and focus completely on sprucing up one's own homestead. Hope all goes well. And I hope you don't need another vacation to recover from this one....

Thanks, S.K. I'm not a big fan of conventional vacations anymore. It actually relaxes me when I take on projects like this one.
