New Site for This Blog?

I have been contemplating moving this blog to another blog hosting platform. I am more or less satisfied with this blog, but it does have some major drawbacks such as not being able to categorize posts in certain ways. I also recently learned that I cannot back up anything I write here. Nor can I transfer it wholesale to another blog hosting site. I don't hold any delusions of grandeur concerning this blog, but I do find it rather alarming that I could essentially lose everything I have written here due to some technical glitch or other.

In light of these considerations, I am pondering other options. I thought about Wordpress, but they seem to be getting a kick out of deplatforming people lately. Many bloggers I follow use Blogspot. Is this is a good option? Any suggestions or advice would be more than welcome.

I use blogspot and find them adequate. No fancy tools, but some decent third party apps that are handy. Also being in the Google umbrella, I suppose it gives your blog some boost with searches. Not that blogs are setting the world on fire these days. It seems people are consumed more with vlogs these days.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Ted. I know what you mean about blogs, but my face is definitely not vlog material.

By the way, I appreciate the link on your excellent Twisting the Tail of the Cosmos blog. I wanted to contact you and thank you personally, but I couldn't figure out how to get in touch with you. Well, now is my chance - thanks!

You're very welcome. I'm enjoying your blog very much also. But I need to be a little more pro-active about communicating.

Blogspot is google. They can deplatform too. and have done so, and also "de-monetized" a lot of vlogs, at utoob.

They also fiddle with search rankings, penalizing the non-PC. BC suspects they did so with his main blog, causing a sharp drop off of visitors. but I don't know that BC did actual SEO-type research and analysis to confirm it. It takes a dynamic kind of two-dimensional analysis of search engine ranking, over time, for various search terms from the referrer logs, not static analysis of mere "page views over time" to justify that conclusion.

Aside from all that, every post, every comment, and every mere page view on blogspot goes into the company's dossier file of the poster/commenter/viewer.

I do not recommend blgspt.

@ Bookslinger - Thanks for the input. In light of what you have revealed, I may be better off just staying put where I am.

Just to clarify what happened

https://charltonteaching.blogspot.com/2017/09/this-blog-is-apparently-being-killed.html

My impression is that when/ if my blog gets about 2500 page views per day, it gets a 'hit' fro something or another than cuts the views by about half - this has probably happened three times now. It may be to do with the fact that the blog s not monetised at all, therefore earns no income for the host, or it may be PC related.

I expect to be deplatormed at any time, so I save the content every while; but I am too lazy and cheapskate to do anything about it - the only medium term solution is to pay your host, and use an independent (i.e. small, low impact) host. But any host organisation can/ will owadays be pressured to conform or die.

The best defence is probably to stay small and low impact - but in today's world there is no real defence and anybody can be made a victim at any time.

So 'consider the lilies' - just get on with it and don't worry.

Thanks for sharing your insights regarding this matter, Bruce. Much appreciated. I will likely just stay put here on Weebly for now. The platform has certain limitations, but I have not experienced too many of the negatives you and others have described.
