Though the sun has slowly begun making its way back to the fields since the solstice - inching a little bit more westward every day - it will remain within the picture frame of my windows for at least another six weeks, granting me another month-and-a-half of free, real-life paintings. On the topic of painting, the sunsets I have had the pleasure of viewing thus thus far have reminded me very much of Heinrich Gogarten (1850-1911) works.
Winter is the only season in which sunsets are comfortably visible from within my house. In the winter months the sun sets behind my backyard, dipping below the horizon just beyond the dilapidated mill that stands not far from the edge of my property. During the rest of the year, the sun goes down in the canola and corn fields on the other side of the small river. Unfortunately, the windows that face in that direction are all too small and too highly situated to warrant decent views of the sunset in the spring, summer or fall. But in the winter, the two enormous windows on the back of my house form a giant canvas for the setting sun.

The first one is stunning. I was instantly reminded of my Grandfathers landscape paintings. He often did winter scenes.
